They say don't judge a book by it's cover, but let's face it...we all do! I wrote an article entitled Substance is Substantial last year because I’m a strong believer that substance holds a greater value than style, however, you gotta sell the substance! In many life situations other than beauty pageants, people use their image to sell themselves. Whether it is at an important business meeting or job interview or even meeting the in-laws for the first time etc, image can give a great or a very, very poor first impression.

I am not an advocate for image narcissists; I’m just saying that it’s ok to put effort into both inner and outer beauty. There’s no unwritten law that states we have to be either Barbie looking airheads or smart intellectual ragdolls! It’s ok to be stunning both on the outside and inside. But I think we sometimes think it’s one or the other and become an extremist in one. We either get carried away trying to imitate media models or too far gone adding depth to our substance while neglecting appearance. Beyonce is a great performer and has a strong work ethic, but let’s not lie to ourselves, it helps that she looks good too. We all know that the Cheryl Cole’s, Rihanna’s and J.Lo’s just to name a few aren’t real ‘singers’ but hey, they look good so we’ll just let their mediocre vocals pass. Kim Kardashian is…does…hey who cares, at the end of the day she looks good so we’ll just put her on magazine covers because we know she will sell it. Are you getting my drift here?!

I find it so aggravating when I meet a person with so much personality and substance but look a hot mess; at first sight, I don’t even want to talk to them! The image sells the content so we must get them both right. I mean, would you guys even bother reading my blog if it just looked like it was going to be a snooze-fest? Point made.

People subconsciously make an initial evaluation on others simply based on their appearance. Your appearance talks to people; a person’s image says a lot about what they think and feel about themselves. Decide what you want your appearance to say to people when they first meet you. Whether you’re at an interview or on a first date, you should be conscious about what you want your appearance to say about you. You should always let your appearance say positive things about you while staying true to who you are. If you got the right substance, don’t let your appearance sell you short. It costs so little to be well groomed; the better you are packaged, the better your chances are of making the sale…and at a higher price.

In short, it pays to look good.

My Not-to-Do List

Thought I’d write a quick Not-to-Do list inspired by Tim Ferriss after reading his book ‘The 4-Hour Work Week’. So my not to dos are…

…check Facebook more than once a month.

I remember when I first discovered the wonders of e-stalking, I was on facebook religiously! FB consumed my time and almost made me flop my exams! I began being so caught up in knowing what other people were up to and doing with their life, what a loser I was lol. I’d take a heap load of pictures at events/social meet ups to the point where I was no longer at the event to really connect with the people but rather to just say I was there and post up the pictures that very evening I got home. Don’t get me wrong, despite having a strong urge to infinitely de-activate my FB account, I still appreciate the main aspect of FB which is to stay in touch with people both new and old, who you wouldn’t necessarily call up or meet up with. It’s always nice to get that friend request or inbox message from a back, back, back in the day friend you thought you’d never see or hear from again or finding out that the new ‘friend’ you made has the most unlikely candidates as mutual friends. Plus, it’s great for promo – though I’d prefer NOT to be at the receiving end of all the nuisance club promos! So yeah, my e-stalking days are long gone.

…get pre-birthday age depression.

It was my 24th birthday on the 25th of Jan. Most of the people who inspire me happen to be notably older than me, one even in his 80s so at the age of 24, the word ‘old’ is the complete opposite of how I’d label myself. Despite feeling (and luckily for me, looking) as young as ever, it didn’t stop the numerous people who tried to inflict age depression onto me! I soon realised that the age depressed folks were the ones who put an age to every life plan e.g. ‘be engaged by the age of 25, then married a year later, then have first kid by the age of 28 but before I even get married, I have to be in a relationship for at least two years first!’ Putting age to plans virtually out of your sole control like getting married and having kids can be so disheartening when you still haven’t even found a long term relationship when your ‘age plan’ suggests that you should be approaching you’re one year wedding anniversary by now. I don’t do the whole age thing any more, because having age targets on ideal situations out of your control makes us forget that contrary to the conventional wisdom that ‘life is short’, life is actually the longest thing we know! New age should not be met with pessimism, instead, be grateful you lived to see another year; with the number of young people I hear are dying these days, each year added to my life is an absolute blessing.

…limit social life to the weekend.

It’s sad when a 9-5 job becomes your life…well unless you skip to work everyday because your doing something you absolutely love. However, for most people caught in the Rat Race, they hate having to work for money yet their 9-5 job has consumed them. I am starting to break the habit of telling myself that I’m too tired after work to do social things, as an attempt to save myself from being one of many 9-5ers who live only for the weekends. I refuse to dedicate 5 out of 7 days of my life working hard for someone else rather than working hard on me.

…idolise man.

The arrival of Onika Maraj in London a few months back caused total chaos; it was pure Minaj Mayhem! Hands up, I love me some Nicki Minaj BUT only to the extent of being able to recite her lyrics! So hearing that girls were crying hysterically and even fainting…jeeze get a grip girls!

Back in my early teenage years, when I used to read Word Up! Magazines, B2K were the ish! I remember when B2K came down to London, me and my school friends found ourselves outside TV studios, radio studios, shopping hotspots, likely hotels and stopping every limousine we saw just in case it was them inside. We went crazy over four guys who bleed blue just like me & you; I look at them now and think, ‘Really J-Boog?! In high school you were the man homie, what happened to you!’ So though I totally understood the hype, for it brought back memories of the days I was B2K & Usher obsessed, it still disturbs me at how celebrity obsessed we are as a people. Reality is, all these celebrities are all human beings just like me and you. I think it’s important to be inspired by others to become better in ourselves but let’s not forget how to distinguish the difference between having life inspiring role models/heroes and human ‘idols’. Idolise no man.

…underestimate myself and overestimate others. Say no more.

At times, I admittedly can be highly opinionated towards other women, thus, on numerous occasions I’ve been accused of being a ‘hater’. One of my most recent so-called ‘hate victims’ happens to be Rosa Acosta. What do I have against her? Though I get frustrated with women who sexually objectify themselves to the extreme, I actually don’t really have anything against her. So for any guy who accuses me of hating on the likes of Rosa Acosta, they are getting the wrong end of the stick. The thing that grinds my gears is the very men who fantasize over these FAKE women!

A male counterpart told me that Rosa’s body was ‘perfect’ and that if ‘women get a body like that, men will lose their minds!’ Firstly, any woman can look ‘perfect’ if they choose to buy their body parts like Rosa chose to buy hers (ahem). Secondly, the audacity of this dude to even suggest a woman should go ‘get a body like that’ in order to enthral the mind of a man or in his very words ‘men will lose their minds’…yeah well evidently he has lost his! There’s a saying that has stuck with me ever since I first heard it, ‘real girls aren’t perfect and perfect girls aren’t real’ and it’s so true. The women who are constantly being picked out as being close to perfection are so fricking fake! If a guy wants a fake woman then so be it, but don’t mould your ideal woman based on them then turn around and say you want a natural woman because that’s just not serious! A real woman cannot mirror a fake woman. I can’t stand it when a guy will more or less worship women with lace front wigs, fake nails, fake eyelashes, fake breasts, fake bums and face all caked up with make-up and then complain that women are too fake - KMDT! They are confused and leaving many women confused too. Therefore, it’s no shock that more and more women reject their natural features in order to fit into a brainwashed ideal.

There is no doubt that like attracts like, so a woman who defines herself by her fake attributes will attract a fake-ass dude! Yes, there are fake guys too; men who mislead women into believing that they are something they are not. Just like women tend to be measured up by their physical attributes, men tend to be measured up by their success. I know of men who do not keep it real; in fact, they even go to criminal extremes just to gain things that they perceive to symbolise success. These fake dudes will ‘invest’ hideous amounts of money on flashy cars, the most blinged out jewellery, the most expensive champagne in the club, and even idolise name brands, etcetera, etcetera, but fail to invest in things that hold more value or will generate more money. They do this all to put on a front in order to feel more confident in their insecure selves and it’s no surprise that these type of men attract fake insecure women. A flashy man sets off a fake woman’s redial instantly because to her, getting with this guy means that she’ll be able to maintain her lifestyle since being fake sure doesn’t come cheap! Fake men and women are merely media dummies; they are caught up in superficial glamour and try to emulate the fantasy world that the entertainment world creates.

I’ve grown to realise that a man who is true to himself wants a woman who is true to herself. I’m certainly no Rosa Acosta and I won’t try to be because fortunately for me the type of man I want to be with is looking for something much more profound than a piece of eye-candy under his arm to get props from his boys. Therefore, rather than trying to perfect my looks and making it the main and only focus in my life, I’d rather divert most of my attention perfecting qualities that are essential in a good woman and cannot be faked. I’ve been fortunate to be in the company of many guys who do not give over-hyped ratings to these fake women. Don’t get me wrong, I'm yet to meet a guy who doesn’t want an attractive woman, but what I’ve come to realise is that an ideal woman to most men is one who has inner beauty qualities that will always outweigh the value of her outer beauty. So for those women who choose to fake their outer beauty in order to make a man ‘lose his mind’, just know that you are attracting men who are not in their right mind because real men want and need real women.

For example, when Eric Benet cheated on Halle Berry we (yes, including myself) were quick to label him an idiot and rightly so but rather than us slewing men like him merely for the wrongful act of infidelity, we choose to say things like ‘how could he cheat on…Halle Berry?!?’ or ‘he’s a fool because he’s girl is so hawt!’ Erm, since when were highly attractive people exceptions to human imperfections? Do pretty people not make mistakes too? Like Kanye said, ‘It can be the prettiest people who do the ugliest things’. As far as I’m concerned we can’t judge anyone’s character merely based on their appearance.

It has become very apparent that we as women are far too caught up in believing that appearance is everything. Yes I know that men are visually stimulated mammals, therefore looking presentable is a must. However, though looking good is prominent, it must NOT be forgotten that being a good ‘looking’ woman will get you a man but being a good woman is what will keep a man! Unfortunately, a lot of young women forget this or even worse, aren’t told. So here we are trying to be hailed as the streets very own Halle Berry, but last time I checked, Halle Berry couldn’t keep to one man! We are constantly being pushed images of beautiful women who are mainly recognised for their beauty rather than their talents as they make it into countless ‘top ten sexiest women of the year’ lists. I stumble upon numerous fashion, hair and beauty tips, all in which show us how to become better looking people and not better people. So am I surprised that women use the streets as runways for their fashion style? Can I blame women who see the necessity on transforming their faces into Picasso artworks? Or even worse, can I be mad at women who show faaaaar too much skin?

The ultimate life plan for most women is to mate, get married and have kids etc so we place heavy emphasis on the first stage of the cycle which is attracting the man. We then somehow forget that after the attraction stage, the man wants to see that underneath the beauty is a woman who he can potentially spend the rest of his life with. I can’t even begin to explain how devastating it is when a beautiful woman sounds like she didn’t even make it past primary school when she opens her mouth. How many women place as much importance on inner beauty as they do outer beauty? Don’t get me wrong, taking meticulous care of your appearance is vital, but having a fabulous body and a pretty face to match is just not enough unless your goal is to be a side chick. There are far too many attractive women in this world for a man to want to stick with you just because you are ‘pretty’. You need to be able to exemplify beauty from inside out; you need to be a woman of substance. A woman of substance knows how to stimulate a man mentally and emotionally, not just visually.

Being a woman of substance is a mixture of several qualities. Some examples may include having virtue and wisdom, being God-fearing, and yes, knowing how to cook and cater all contributes to becoming an all-rounded good woman. Overall, the main thing I’ve learnt is that a good woman is one who can upgrade a man – in words other than Beyonce’s & Jay Z’s, someone who will ultimately make him a greater/better person. They say men who chase women get less done, so there’s nothing greater than a woman who helps a man get things done plus I don’t recall there being an adage that states ‘behind every great man is a great looking woman!’ So ladies, let’s learn to be good women just as much as we study celebrity style and beauty tips in order to be good looking women, because having substance is substantial in sustaining a strong relationship.

Beauty does not lie in the Booty!

Whether real or arguably fake (ahem, Minaj), the big booty mania just seems like it’s even more in our faces than ever before. Many women in the entertainment industry, most notably the video vixens, have used their astronomical behinds to build a career but now the exploitation of the booty has reached an all time high, and if I see another female booty displayed on my screen (both TV & PC), I think I will do Chris Brown back flips! I’m just so sick and tired of seeing and hearing discussions on women’s fake arses! The huge fascination with it is driving me crazy, after all, the booty is there to sit on and sh*t from! Ok, ok, I guess it’s not really rocket science why men like the big booty but since this is not a Kama Sutra type of article, I will refrain from elaborating! Thanks to Sir Mix A Lot and almost every mainstream rap video ever made, the ‘I love big butts and I cannot lie’ trait happens to be a common male trait that just won’t budge.

I’m not a ‘big booty’ hater but I’m just irritated with the heavy media attention on a female’s behind; it has gone a tad bit too far don’t you think? As though the pressures of being a woman isn’t hard enough, now I’m being told that I need to maintain a 23 waist size and somehow, acquire a midget in my arse! I’m pretty sure many women were more than happy with their derrières until Nicki Minaj and her spandex came along! How many women can admit that while getting changed they have asked themselves ‘does my arse look big in this?’ Unfortunately it is a question that many women are familiar with and the big booty pressures have even pushed women into wearing the ridiculous booty pads. Just when I thought booty pads were exclusive to Beyonce, my sister tells me that a woman she works with admitted to wearing them every day to work and when she goes out!

These ‘hate your body and desire a body like this’ messages may be easily head shaken away for the strong minded consumer of it but we cannot overlook the fact that young people tend to be very vulnerable to media influences. If their ideologies are being moulded to adopt self-hate and negativity then only God knows what they will be inflicting onto our future children/grandchildren. Quite frankly, beauty does not lie in the booty so I would hate for any woman to not feel beautiful enough just because she is lacking in the booty department or any department for that matter. What makes a woman sexy is her confidence but before you can ooze confidence, you firstly need to be content with your body. At the end of the day a true man will never deny a good woman simply because she doesn’t have a big booty complete with double D cups and a 23 inch waist. As desirable as having these physical attributes may be, we must understand that it only serves to make us more sexually desirable and not necessarily wifey material. So to all the media messages telling me to want a bigger arse…kiss my arse!

One thing I always question is how people can be 'friends' with an ex; as in talk on the phone and even meet up once in a while - who does that?! lol. I mean, being civil is understandable and if there's kids involved then that's even more so a reason to be amicable. However, if there are no ties then I personally don't understand how one can be good friends with an ex (or someone they were emotionally involved with) without one of them liking the other again, it just doesn't work in my books! So yeah, there are certain people I just can't be friends with anymore...

Remember that Ne-Yo ‘Miss Independent’ song? Yeah, I hated it lol (however, I did quite like the remix with Jamie Foxx though!). In general, I’ll roll my eyes and kiss my teeth at any song that encourages men and women to believe that being an independent woman is a good thing because quite frankly, it’s not.

I wrote an article a couple years back called Count Me Out in which I discussed why I refuse to be the independent woman society is making us believe women should become. My refusal to be independent was derived from me living through the struggles of an independent woman very close to me – my mother. I felt the need to re-visit this topic after overhearing a young woman proudly pronounce herself as an independent woman as though it was a big accomplishment to be boastful about. Why do these girls think that having a steady job, a car, own apartment and being able to pay their own bills makes them an independent woman? Every adult is expected to pay for their own bills etc; learning to do things for yourself is part of growing up into a responsible adult so why are these girls trying to get extra brownie points for longer depending on their parents?! Hello, it’s called being an adult!

A true independent woman is one who has NO CHOICE but to do things without a man. As I watched my mother juggle ‘daddy duties’ with her own while she tried to raise five kids by herself, it was made very apparent to me that I wanted my life to be totally different to hers; being an independent woman sucks! The funny thing is I never hear these widowed women/single mums advertising their independence so I never understood how it became somewhat ‘glorified’? How did this ‘I'm an independent woman’ foolishness among young women even begin? I hope it wasn’t that Destiny’s Child tune from way back (that was a tune though!) because Beyonce who supposedly penned that ‘I don’t need a man’ anthem is now a happily married woman who sings songs about catering to her man and him putting a ring on it.

Being an independent woman is not cool and should never be an aspiration...unless you aspire to be single for the rest of your life that is. It should not be perceived as a weakness for a woman to acknowledge that she does in fact need a man; I personally see that as maturity and cognizance to the epic fail of being ‘Miss Independent’. I know for certain that these women who have to take care of home without a man would readily abandon their forced independence if the right man came along. This is just another example of a woman empowerment movement that has gone wrong; don’t fall for the hype ladies! Men and women need to complement one another and after witnessing my mother’s turbulent single parent experience, I can assertively say that I am not on this hype!

It’s logic really but for some reason there are deluded men, and women alike, out there saying they want this and want that but they aren’t even half of what they fricking want!
